4ths

To do this tutorial you need to have learned 5ths.

Summary

A 4th is an inversion of a 5th. That means that if you take a 5th (e.g. C-G) and put the bottom note above the top one (so you get G-C) it becomes a 4th.

So a 4th is either:

  • two white notes that have 2 white notes in between (e.g. G-C), or
  • two black notes that have 1 black note in between (e.g. Bb-Eb),

with the exception of F-Bb and F#-B.

To do

Practice playing 4ths on the piano, remembering to include some that start on F or F#.
